Steffen Gielen awarded Votruba thesis prize
To commemorate the late Professor Václav Votruba, the founder of modern Czech theoretical physics, the Doppler Institute has established a prize bearing his name, which is awarded annually to the author of the best doctoral thesis in theoretical physics. The prize is sponsored by The Foundation for Support of Theoretical Physics.
The 2011 prize was awarded to Dr. Steffen Gielen, formerly a PhD student in DAMTP, for the thesis Geometric Aspects of Gauge and Spacetime Symmetries which he defended in March. Steffen's PhD supervisor was Professor Gary Gibbons. Steffen is now working as a postdoctoral fellow in the Canonical and Covariant Dynamics of Quantum Gravity group at the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam, Germany.
