New G I Taylor Professor of Fluid Mechanics

Paul Linden FRS, currently Blasker Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering at University of California San Diego has been elected as the third holder of the G I Taylor Professorship of Fluid Mechanics.

Professor Linden was previously in DAMTP for many years, starting as a research student and ending as Reader in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, before leaving for San Diego in 1998. He is a Fellows of the Royal Society, elected in 2007, and is internationally known and respected for his laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses of fluid flows relevant to oceanography, meteorology, and environmental and industrial problems. In San Diego he has been Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Professor Linden is a leading figure in environment and sustainability research is currently Director of the UCSD Sustainability Solutions Institute. His appointment will not only strengthen this area in DAMTP but connect to important activities elsewhere in the University, including the Centre for Sustainable Development in the Department of Engineering.

Professor Linden is expected to begin as G I Taylor Professor in July 2010.
