1653) 27/10/11  Quota problems [IMPORTANT]

SUMMARY: Quota limits (and usage) for some users became broken this morning. New quota usage values have now been constructed and limits applied.

Probably as a result of the problems with cingulum this morning (see news item 1652) a number of users had quota limits changed (possibly to older values) and the usage reported was nowhere near correct.

We have now regenerated the current usage for everyone which caused about 22 users to be over their current quota limits. These have had the quota limits increased so that no-one is now over quota. However please note that:

  • some people may now be much closer to their quota limits than they realized
  • the quota limits may not reflect any changes you have asked for
  • the Linux quota display applet may well have died while we rebuilt the quota usage - since quotas are disabled as it works and the applet does not expect that to happen

A few users may now be very close to their quota limits - this may be normal or may have been as a result of applications or code using up significant space in the time when there were no quota limits.

If the quota limits are causing problems please send a message to help@maths.cam.ac.uk explaining why the current limits are not enough and how much extra space you need (and for how long you expect to need it).

Please delete any files you are sure you no longer need. Anything which you don't expect to access for a while can probably be compressed (it is far more efficient to make an archive and compress that than to compress individual files). For information about file operations please read the notes in http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/internal/computing/files/
