Punch marks are decorative impressions in the gold leaf of medieval paintings. The tools made to create punch marks were often reused in multiple paintings or even shared between workshops. We aim to automatically classify the tool used for a punch mark to support art-historical investigations, and in the process consider the challenges learned models face in generalizing to new paintings (i.e. domains).
